This prestigious debut by Chun Wong is nominated for eight Hong Kong Film Awards
The tenth edition of CinemAsia has found its opening film! On March 7 we kick of our anniversary edition with MAD WORLD, the emotionally gripping debut by Chun Wong about an alienated man who suffers from a bipolar disorder. Shawn Yue (INFERNAL AFFAIRS), Eric Tsang (INFERNAL AFFAIRS) and Elaine Jin (A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY) star in the film that already received eight Hong Kong Film Award nominations. Earlier MAD WORLD won three Golden Horse Awards at the 2016 Golden Horse Film Festival in Taiwan for Chun Wong (‘Best New Director’) and Elaine Jin (‘Best Supporting Actress’).
MAD WORLD will have its European premier during CinemAsia Film Festival. After being discharged from a mental institution, Ah-Yang (Shawn Yue) moves in with his father (Eric Tsang), claiming space in an already cramped apartment. It’s from this claustrophobic position where the two estranged relatives attempt to build a better, mutual future. Their efforts are hindered by traumatic events from the past, challenging the men’s claim for happiness. This highly emotional feature film debut from Wong Chung portrays the struggles of those burdened by guilt and of those incapable of forgiving the guilty. Everyone carries a semblance of guilt in MAD WORLD, an endearing drama about the deprivations of a misunderstood man with bipolar disorder.
MAD WORLD will not only open the tenth edition of CinemAsia Film Festival, but also kick of our competition in which seven films from all over Asia compete for the Tiger Beer Jury Award along with a cash price of 1000 euros. Meanwhile MAD WORLD is also in the race for eight Hong Kong Film Awards in the categories ‘Best Director’, ‘Best New Director’, ‘Best Actor’, ‘Best supporting actor’, ‘Best Supporting Actress’ (2x), ‘Best Screenplay’ and ‘Best Film Score’.
