CinemAsia started in 2003 with the first Queer and Asian screenings at the Cavia. Queer LGBT films from Asia along with Asian Diaspora films have always been a cornerstone of the programming since the beginning. CinemAsia gives special attention to stories from marginalized Asian communities.
From an fascinating look into lesbian and transgender life in Indonesia in CHILDREN OF SRIKANDI to a hilarious Gay zombie movie ZOMBADINGS, to LONELY MAN an impressive drama about the relationship between a transgender sex worker and his Muslim daughter, to an romantic comedy between a butch lesbian and a transgendered person WHEN HAINAN MEETS TEOCHEW, there’s something for everyone!
This year we’re pleased to have as our special Queer and Asian special guest, Fan Popo, director of the festival film BE A WOMAN and well known gay rights activist in China. At the young age of 25, Mr. Fan has made several films about LGBT issues in China as well as being the director of both the LGBT center in China and the Beijing Queer Film Festival. He will be present after the screenings of his films and at the Freedom of Speech panel.
