 This year’s 5th edition of the CinemAsia film festival in De Balie in Amsterdam was a success and has attracted most visitors per screening than ever before. We are very happy to have shared our great selection of Asian movies with so many people. CINEMASIA FILM FESTIVAL GOES ANNUAL Instead of hosting our main film festival once every two years, CinemAsia has decided to go annual. You can already reserve the dates for our 6th edition on the first week of april 2013. This would mean a new edition featuring the finest selection of Asian blockbusters, independent films and documentaries on the screen. Also in our next edition, we will host our FilmLab again. The CinemAsia FilmLab gives new talents a chance to make a short film under coaching and guidance of experienced filmmakers. QUARTERLY SCREENINGS IN THE RUN-UP In the run-up to the 6th edition, CinemAsia will also showcase an Asian film in De Balie in Amsterdam every season. CINEMASIA SUMMER SCREENING, AUGUST 3 DE BALIE, AMSTERDAM Our Story –10-year 'Guerrilla Warfare' of Beijing Queer Film Festival 我们的故事 (China 2011) directed by Yang Yang Out & Proud in Asia? For ten years the Beijing Queer Film Festival has battled official oppression and homophobia to fight for more visibility for gays and lesbian issues in China. This film documents this struggle and the ‘guerrilla’ tactics used by the festival’s organisers. Yang Yang, director of the film has been executive director of the festival for 10 years, providing an essential space for the queer and allied communities of Beijing.  Language: Chinese with English subtitles After the movie there is a discussion about LGBT Life in Asia. Panel members such as Stijn DeKlerck (Programmer of Beijing Queer Film Festival), Saskia Wieringa (Professor Gender and Women’s Same-Sex Relations Crossculturally at the University of Amsterdam) and others will take part in the discussion. Asia is emerging on all fronts, but Asian film programming in Europe still remains limited to mostly selected arthouse films that doesn’t always reflect the diversity of a rapidly changing Asia. Therefore CinemAsia exhibits a diverse selection of films. Besides our screenings, CinemAsia aims to be a platform that promotes the visibility of Asians in the media. |
