Filmlab

In 2006 organiseerde CinemAsia de eerste FilmLab om de media productie te stimuleren binnen de Aziatische gemeen- schappen. De ongelofelijke positieve respons bevestigde dat er behoefte was aan een hogere vertegenwoordiging van Aziaten on screen en in de media in zijn algemeen. Dus dit jaar presen- teren wij weer met trost het 2010 FilmLab programma. Begin 2010 was er een oproep geplaatst voor inzendingen en een se- lectie van Aziatisch-Nederlandse filmmakers werden benaderd om een concept te bedenken voor een korte film binnen het festivalthema Underdog Hero – hoe mensen zich zelf weten te overtreffen in moeilijke tijden. Uiteindelijk zijn er drie finalisten genomineerd die tot taak kregen een korte film te maken van 10-15 minuten. De eindresultaten zullen tijdens dit festival ge- toond worden in het MADE IN HOLLAND korte filmprogramma en onderdeel zijn van de paneldiscussie “Slanted Vision – Asian Europeans in Film and Media”.

De filmmakers werden begeleid door de mentoren Yan Ting Yuen, Djie Han Thung en Doris Yeung. Het CinemAsia FilmLab is een samenwerking tussen CinemAsia, de Binger Filmlab, de Nederlandse Film en Televisie Academie en de Rutger Hauer Filmfactory.

CinemAsia FilmLab 2010 finalisten en films:
Alex Cheung
Alex Cheung (23) is geboren en getogen in Utrecht. Hij beoe- fent al van kleins af aan Kungfu, gestimuleerd door Martial Arts films. Nu geeft hij ook Kungfu workshops en voorstellingen. In zijn vrije tijd speelt hij klassieke piano. Hij studeert International Marketing Management. Zijn passie gaat uit naar films maken. In de zomer van 2009 richtte hij de filmclub “aCreations” op om jonge talenten te ontdekken en meer vertoning van Aziaten in de Nederlandse film te stimuleren.

A SINGLE STEP
Een kleine jongen van Chinese afkomst is slachtoffer van pesterij. Hij krijgt te maken met hangjongeren. Hij besluit om Kungfu les te nemen wanneer hij Sophia ontmoet en zo zijn eerste stap zet.

Patrick Daniel van Es
Patrick (32) heeft een Aziatische moeder en een Nederlandse vader. Hun culturen rijmden niet, en hij groeide op in de kort- sluiting. Sindsdien is hij op zoek naar het mythische perspectief achter elk verhaal voor een beter inzicht in onze wereld. Op deze manier kwam Patrick bij het verhaal van Florian (Mena Muria). In Tel Aviv won hij eerder een prijs voor Best Screenplay waarbij de jury schreef: “a strong and poignant story, written in a unique manner which addresses complex issues with delicacy and subtle humour.”

MENA MURIA
Nederland, 25 april 2010: de proclamatiedag van Zuid-Molukse Republiek valt op een zondag, een dag waarop het niet is toegestaan de vlag te hijsen. De jonge Florian Manuputty (25) wil het ritueel toch uitvoeren, maar wordt gehinderd door zijn vader en grootvader. Mena Muria is het motto dat ze bindt, maar zullen ze de gelederen gesloten kunnen houden?

Rishi Chamman
Rishi Chamman (32) is een scenarioschrijver/regisseur. Hij maakte onder andere de documentaire Bollywood Blues (NPS), de korte film Sapney (VPRO) en de jeugddocumentaire Jeuk (OHM/Z@ppelin). Laxmi calling Ling, een verhaal over straat- angst, is zijn regiedebuut van de fictieve film.

LAXMI CALLING LING
Ling is gedwongen haar straatvrees te confronteren wanneer een Indiase dame haar blijft bellen, omdat zij denk dat zij haar dochter is. Een verhaal over een bijzondere vriendschap.

In 2006 CinemAsia organized the first FilmLab in order to stimulate media production within the local Asian com- munity. The incredibly positive response affirmed the need for more representation of Asians on the screen and in the media. So this year CinemAsia is proud to once again pre- sent the 2010 FilmLab program. In the beginning of 2010, a call for entries was sent out and a selection of young Asian Dutch filmmakers was approached to submit an idea for a short film under the festival theme Underdog Hero – how people surpass themselves in difficult times. Three finalists were chosen to make a short film of 10-15 minutes that will be screened during the festival as part of the MADE IN HOL- LAND short film program and be part of the panel discussion “Slanted Vision: Asian Europeans in Film and Media”.

The filmmakers were coached by mentors Yan Ting Yuen, Djie Han Thung and Doris Yeung. The CinemAsia FilmLab is a collaboration between CinemAsia, the Binger Filmlab, The Netherlands Film and Television Academy and the Rutger Hauer Filmfactory.

He also likes to play the piano. He studies Internati- onal Marketing Management. But his real passion is about filmmaking. In the summer of 2009 he founded the film club “aCreations” to discover young talent and to stimulate Asian appearance in Dutch film.

A young Chinese boy is bullied by some street kids. After meeting Sophia, his world is changed and he decides to take on the boys and impress the girl....with Kung Fu!

Patrick (32) has a Asian mother and a Dutch father in a bi-cultural household. He is looking for mythical side of every story for a deeper understanding of the world. This is how he came up with the story about Florian (Mena Muria). He won earlier In Tel Aviv a price for Best Screenplay, where the jury wrote: “a strong and poignant story, written in a unique manner which addresses com- plex issues with delicacy and subtle humour.”

The Netherlands, April 25th, 2010 : Proclamation Day of the South Moluccan Republic falls on a Sunday, when it is not allowed to raise the flag. Florian Manuputty (25) wants to perform the ritual anyway, but is hindered by his father and grandfather. Mena Muria is the motto that binds them, but will they be able stay together as a family?

Rishi Chamman (32) is film writer and director. His work includes the documentary Bollywood Blues (NPS), the short film Sapney (VPRO) and the youth documentary Jeuk (OHM/Z@ppelin). Laxmi calling Ling, a story about agoraphobia is his first fiction film.

Ling is forced to confront her fear of going outdoors when a crazy Indian woman keeps calling her thinking she is her daughter. A story of an unlikely friendship.
