OH LUCY! is a bittersweet comedy in which Japanese filmmaker Atsuko Hirayanagi sketches the cultural differences between East and West in striking scenes. The loving portrayal of her characters and the touching end of OH LUCY! makes it a real feel-good movie.
Setsuko Kawashima (Shinobu Terajima), a lonely, chain-smoking office lady in Tokyo, has past her prime. Pushed by her niece Mika (Shioli Kutsuna) she decides to take English class. Her American teacher John (Josh Harnett) not only teaches the language but also introduces the Western culture to his Japanese students. John gives Setsuko a blonde wig, a new identity, and an American alter ego: “Lucy”. When John suddenly disappears, Setsuko sets out an a quest together with her sister to the outskirts of Southern California. In this unknown world with tattoo shops and dirty motels, family ties and old patterns are being tested, while Setsuko tries to keep the dream of her alter ego alive.
About the director
Atsuko Hirayanagi was born in Nagano and raised in Chiba, Japan. She is a graduate of NYU Tisch School of The Arts with an MFA in Film Production. Her second year project, MO IKKAI, won the Grand Prix at the 2012 Short Shorts Film Festival in Asia. Her thesis short film, OH LUCY!, received a First Prize Wasserman Award and also won more than 25 awards around the globe, including prizes at Cannes, Sundance and Toronto lm festivals. OH LUCY! is the feature-lenght version of this film, and has already received the 2016 Sundance / NHK Award during development.
