“Rich boy meets poor girl” is a well-worn narrative that often results in saccharine romantic stories in Hollywood-produced films. In the hands of debuting director Rohena Gera, it turns into a beautiful, realistic drama that subtly depicts gender roles in India and especially how life in this country is determined by insurmountable class differences. But rigid as the class system may be, Gera shows that actual people sometimes have real feelings that transcend boundaries.

Ratna, a young widow, comes to Mumbai to work for a wealthy family, which has made its fortune in construction. She is employed to serve as a chambermaid for their son Ashwin, a polite and friendly young man who treats her with respect. They turn out to have a lot in common, not in the least that they both would have preferred to live a different life. Their mutual attraction is unmistakable.
