Love or arranged marriage?

How does one find the ideal partner for life and what role does love play in it? In this enjoyable documentary, Indian director Rohena Gera contrasts two starkly opposing ideas: the western notion of romantic love vs. the concept of arranged marriage, which is common practice in India.

Gera, whose feature debut Sir is the opening film of this year’s festival, talks to eight individuals who are preparing for their respective arranged marriages. They are educated, in their late twenties to early thirties and have lived abroad and seen enough American romcoms to be affected by the notion that you might just bump into your soul mate in a cosy coffee bar. Their parents see things quite differently: you will learn to love your arranged partner eventually, is what they tell their children. Gera shows that there are many arguments against both positions.
