Air pollution in New Delhi, one of the world’s most crowded cities, is so serious that many species have been falling ill. Brothers Nadeem and Saud are running a makeshift hospital from their basement to treat one particular animal, the black kites. These majestic birds of prey have started to fall from New Delhi’s toxic skies at an alarming rate. Determined to save them, the brothers dream of building a proper rescue centre.
The first film to be named Best Documentary at both Cannes and Sundance, director Shaunak SEN’s warmly humane documentary explores the connection between the black kites and the Muslim brothers who help them return to the skies. The film is also nominated for Best Documentary Feature Film at the 95th Academy Awards.
All That Breathes is at once a portrait of two brothers dedicated to their craft and a cinematic meditation on the stakes of inter-species kinship, set against the backdrop of the increasing social unrest breaking out in the streets of Narendra Modi’s India.
