Rakib—young, meek and idle—is a live-in housekeeper at a deserted mansion in the countryside owned by a retired general, Purna. When Purna returns home to campaign for mayor, he takes Rakib under his wing. With his father in prison and his brother living overseas, Rakib begins to look up to Purna as a father figure and gains more confidence under his guidance. Their quiet existence soon spirals into a series of violence when Purna finds his banner defaced and orders Rakib to track the perpetrator.
Autobiography is a haunting feature debut set in contemporary Indonesia that follows a young man’s desperate desire for approval, while simultaneously addressing the country’s patriarchal power relations, the lasting effects of the Suharto regime, and the collective trauma of a nation
