Keiko, a young woman with a hearing impairment, dreams of becoming a professional boxer. A cleaner in a luxury hotel by day, she trains hard and fights well under the dedicated guidance of her boxing coach. Faced with the boxing club’s imminent closure because of the COVID-19 pandemic and her coach’sthe club’s chairmanailing health, Keiko is forced to navigate these uncertain times and find strength in herself and others.

Small, Slow but Steady is, as its title promises, a small but profound meditation on what it takes to persist and fight on. Resisting Rocky-like moments of rousing triumph, the film turns its attention towards the everyday rhythms of life. Shot beautifully on 16mm and featuring an unforgettable performance by lead actress KISHII Yukino, this delicate character study showcases the best that Japanese slice-of-life cinema has to offer.
