SECRETS OF 1979 弓蕉園的秘密

Sat 14 May | 16:30 Studio/K |With an introduction by Ruby HSIEH I Hsuan
Ruby HSIEH I Hsuan is a film curator, critic, and researcher with a focus on Taiwanese and Southeast Asian cinema. She works as a selection committee member for the Taipei Film Festival (2020-) and a programmer at Women Make Waves Film Festival Taiwan. She currently develops a research project about film museums / audiovisual archives in the Netherlands and Taiwan.

In the summer of 1979, Bing-kuan asks her college friend Shu-lan to help out on her family’s banana plantation. As time goes by, the two girls secretly develop a romantic relationship. They later decide to volunteer at the Formosa Magazine to promote freedom of expression, but their budding relationship is threatened as the Kuomintang regime seeks to suppress dissident voices. Set amidst Taiwan’s period of martial law, Secrets of 1979 intertwines the personal with the political and tells a story of youthful romance in turbulent times.
