CinemAsia launches new, improved masterclasses from this edition onwards by our national and international guests.
We are very honored that two of our renowned jury members kick off the CinemAsia masterclass program! Indonesian director JOKO ANWAR (SATAN’S SLAVES, HALFWORLDS, A COPY OF MIND) and Dutch director MARTIN KOOLHOVEN (BRIMSTONE, WINTER IN WARTIME) will talk about their experiences with directing genre films.
ANWAR broke through in 2003 as screenwriter of the successful Indonesian comedy ARISAN! Since then he has directed five long feature films. At this edition of CinemAsia he presents SATAN’S SLAVES, a story about a ghostmother who is about to die and yet returns home to pick up her children.
KOOLHOVEN debuted in the Netherlands with the television film DUISTER LICHT. Since then he has been known at home and abroad as the director of comedy SCHNITZEL PARADISE, historical drama WINTER IN WARTIME and the Calvinist western BRIMSTONE. As co-host of cinema program Cinema Egzotik in EYE, he has been sharing his love for film and world cinema with a larger audience for years.
In a conversation moderated by film journalist Hugo Emmerzael, these two directors and filmlovers elaborate on their artistic vision, the audience of their films (national and international) and at the differences – and possibly also similarities – between the European and Asian markets.
