An essential work of Hong Kong queer cinema, Stanley KWAN’s LAN YU is a poignant portrait of two men’s unexpected relationship, in the turbulence of 1980’s Beijing. This conversation aims to discuss the legacy of the film, 20 years after its release and its impact on the contemporary Chinese queer lives.

Stijn Deklerck
Stijn Deklerck is Senior Officer Human Rights Programmes (China) at Amnesty International Netherlands, and teaches Chinese Law at the university of Leuven (Belgium). He holds a master’s degree in law and obtained his PhD in sinology with a study of activism in China’s contemporary LGBTI movement.

Jeroen de Kloet
Jeroen de Kloet is Professor of Globalisation Studies and Head of the Department of Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam. He is also a professor at the State Key Lab of Media Convergence and Communication, Communication University of China in Beijing. 

Zhiren Ye
Zhiren Ye is a change advocate. He has led social changes in China through his LGBTQI and feminist activism, and he continues his advocacy work as a Campaigner in an international NGO Oxfam Novib.
