In the mountains of northeastern Taiwan, an Atayal family is shaken after the death of their beloved grandfather. The eldest son decides to run for village chief despite his family’s financial difficulties, and the granddaughter returns from New Zealand with some unexpected news. Generational conflicts arise as the family faces challenges new and old in order to stay together as a family.

Gaga is the final film in the Atayal trilogy by director Laha MEBOW, the first indigenous female director in Taiwan. The title refers to the Atayal word for ancestral laws, but maintaining such traditions in a world of change is a difficult path, as this film reflects with much humour and warmth. Earnest, funny, and profound, Gaga is a heartwarming family portrait and a loving celebration of the Atayal people.

Mebow’s sensitive filmmaking earned her the Best Director awards at the 2022 Golden Horse Awards and the 2022 Singapore International Film Festival – Asian Feature Film Competition.
