Competition program and international jury announced
CinemAsia’s COMPETITION program puts the spotlight on a new generation of makers. Directors with a strong artistic and cinematographic signature. Together these films highlight the abundant variety in themes and genres within Asian cinema. The films reflect a complex caleidoscope of cultural, social and political characteristics to be found within the region.
An international jury of three critically reviews the COMPETITION program. The winner will be announced during the closing ceremony on 15 May. The jury consists of Wang Xiaoshuai, Isabel Arrate Fernandez and Emile Fallaux.

JURY
Wang Xiaoshuai was born in 1966 and graduated from the Beijing Film Academy. At 27, he emerged as one of the key Sixth Generation directors with his debut feature The Days (1993). Wang’s works have competed in the Cannes Film Festival four times, three times in the Berlinale, and also at Venice and San Sebastian film festivals. His latest title So Long, My Son (2019) won two Silver Bears for Best Actor and Actress at the 69th Berlin International Film Festival.
Isabel Arrate Fernandez is the manager of the IDFA Bertha Fund (formerly known as the Jan Vrijman Fund) since 2002. She has an MA in Film Studies from the University of Amsterdam, and worked in festival production, programming, and film financing before joining IDFA. In 15 years, the IDFA Bertha Fund has developed into an internationally renowned institution with a broad network supporting over 500 documentary projects and film organizations in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America.
Emile Fallaux is a journalist, previously the editor-in-chief of Vrij Nederland, and the former director of the International Film Festival Rotterdam. He was also the editor-in-chief and program maker for the VPRO, and a correspondent and documentary filmmaker in New York. Fallaux has been a board member for several Dutch cultural organizations, such as Nederlands Filmfonds, Mediafonds and Prins Claus Fonds.
